Steven Joyce

Lykourgos (Family Feud)

breakfast asks to be confident
to be European and alpine
to offer bright snow light
but it fails instead
looks to mythic stoma
that breathes from under the green
it looks to pare toenails
and tease curls
It has its own ciborium
seeks solace amid war
in words
in the ever widening margin of ritual
and family
that forces us to shake our heads
raise our hands to the Father

breakfast belongs
to centaurs and Maenads
and that is the way the day should begin
running from rock to rock
tree to tree and mating
madly goat laughter
rolling down the valleys of coffee and cereal
It should tank
and drive beer bellied gods into the sea
and every Olympian
should take note
that indeed He ran Him
into the sea and paid
only a small price
some deafness
some death...
